"I was deeply honored to be chosen to paint the portraits of seven department heads from the Department of Agriculture who were tragically killed in the Oklahoma City bombing. This work, commissioned to honor these victims, was unveiled during the 10th anniversary memorial service held in 2005 by the Department of Agriculture in their new facility in Washington, D.C., an event which I was honored to attend.
I tried to capture the beauty, individuality and dignity of these seven Americans rather than cast them as victims. Like Oklahoma itself, they have come to represent the heartland of America. May they never be forgotten."
