Sylvia James George began her
art career at Pratt Institute in New York City, where
she received a BA in Fine Arts. Intensive, classical
courses such as anatomy and physiology trained her
to accurately perceive and paint not only the surface
of the body but the muscle and bone structure beneath
which gives the skin it's form. Her thorough training
in proportion, perspective, lighting and the techniques
of the old masters has enabled her to become a highly
regarded fine artist.
It is her love of people, however,
and the joy she finds in capturing their personalities
along with their images that has made her such a natural
at portraiture. Her commissions now number in the
thousands. With her endearing smile and sincere policy
of complete satisfaction, she has won many repeat
customers, and word of mouth has spread her reputation
around the world. The Van de Perre's of Belgium are
one example, having commissioned nine paintings over
the years. Sylvia's works also hang in such places as England, Japan, Africa, and Bermuda as well as across the mainland United States and Hawaii.
Sylvia is a certified member
of the Maryland Society of Portrait Painters, a founding
member of the Maryland Pastel Society and Howard County
Society of Portrait Painters, a member of the American
Institute of Conservation and was appointed Chairman
of the Arts Registry by the Howard County Arts Council.

proud mother of 8 children, her own home grown models
which are, as she loves to call them, her very finest
works. She is also Nana to 22 wonderful and adoring
grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. They are her fountain of youth and her inspiration.

Celebrating 20 Years at Historic Savage Mill!
From the Historic Savage Mill web site:
"Stroll into Sylvia James
George’s Art Studio & Gallery and you will
find the artist with brushes in hand and a warm smile
upon her face, for this is a woman doing what she
loves. Sylvias studio has been a fixture at
Historic
Savage Mill in Savage, MD since 1986, but she
has been painting all her life.
A highly accredited and accomplished
artist with old master training, her creations grace
the walls of countless homes, businesses and museums
around the world and are meticulously rendered in
a variety of mediums including oils, pastels, watercolors,
pen and ink, and charcoal.
Although she enjoys painting
landscapes, seascapes and animals, Sylvia especially
enjoys portrait painting, delighting in being able
to capture the subject's personality on canvas. Sylvia
deftly works from sittings, photos or a combination
of the two and specializes in rendering a finished
painting from a composite of photos. Complete satisfaction
is assured and private unveilings are available upon
request.
Visitors to Sylvia's studio
and gallery are afforded the opportunity to observe
a master fine artist at work and to explore a variety
of her paintings on display and in various stages
of completion as well as countless photographs of
earlier works."
